Welcome to Halle an der Saale

We are pleased to welcome you to Halle (Saale) as a participant:in the congress from 10 – 13 March 2024. In addition to the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, which is one of the oldest German universities, the city boasts many other important cultural and museum institutions. These include, for example, the Moritzburg Art Museum, the State Museum of Prehistory, where you can see the Nebra Sky Disk (UNESCO World Documentary Heritage) up close, or the Händel Birthplace. With the Future Centre for German Unity and European Transformation, another central institution is being built that emphasises the importance of the city far beyond the state.

What really makes the city liveable, however, is the Saale River, which flows right through the city and creates a huge recreational area with numerous walking paths, picnic areas, playgrounds and a boat rental. In the evening, Kleine Ulrichstraße and Sternstraße with their numerous restaurants invite you to linger and enjoy a cosy end to a long day at the congress.

Welcome to the Francke Foundations

As the venue for the 29th Congress of the German Society for Educational Science, and especially against the background of the congress theme “Crises and Transformations”, we could think of no better venue than the Francke Foundations. The later school town was founded in 1698 by the theologian and educationalist August Hermann Francke, as a social initiative. As a globally unique example of social and educational purpose-built architecture, the historic buildings were included on the German proposal list for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Francke Foundations are an educational cosmos that is unique in Europe today. They house over 40 educational, scientific, social, cultural and religious institutions. These include the Federal Cultural Foundation, the German Youth Institute (Deutsches Jugendinstitut e. V.), the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of the European Enlightenment (IZEA) as well as the Philiosophical Faculty III – Educational Sciences and the Theological Faculty of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

With around 1,800 participants expected, the 29th DGfE Congress is the largest event ever held at the University of Halle and one of the largest conferences in Saxony-Anhalt. Accordingly, we need almost all the rooms and corners on the Foundation grounds for our diverse congress programme. This could only be made possible in cooperation with the foundations themselves and the individual institutions and facilities. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their cooperation and support during the planning and implementation.

You can find more information on the individual houses and rooms as well as a site plan in the “Houses & Rooms” section (LINK).
